The history of Hsiu Yu Chinese Restaurant started in Taiwan. At age 21, John Yu started his culinary career by earning his degree from Taiwan's first government culinary school. Shortly after graduating culinary school, John found himself traveling the world as a cook on a cargo ship. In 1971, he landed in New York City and for several years worked in various restaurants. Still in pursuit of something more, John moved to San Antonio in 1974.

Hsiu's journey also originated in Taiwan. She left Taiwan in 1971 to the U.S. in hopes of a better life. By sheer determination, Hsiu learned English by watching Sesame Street. She worked for different restaurants learning all she could from anyone that would teach her. In 1978, while working one of her two jobs, she met John and a year later they married. It took John and Hsiu five years to take that leap of faith and start their own business.

On October 17, 1983, Hsiu Yu opened its doors for the first time. For over 29 years, Hsiu Yu Chinese Restaurant has been a staple in the Alamo Heights area and over the years has earned numerous awards including Entrepreneur of the Year in 1994. They have been reviewed by Texas Monthly 4 times and voted Best Chinese Food in 2004 and 2005 by AOL City Guide.

In 2005, Hsiu Yu Chinese Restaurant was awarded Best of the City 2005 by San Antonio Magazine and nominated as a Top Woman Restauranteur by San Antonio Women's Magazine. They have also been featured by San Antonio Express News in 1994 and 2011. Since opening its doors in 1983, Hsiu Yu Chinese Restaurant strives to deliver its valued customers an extraordinary dining experience, treating everyone as family.
